Local SEO attracts more folklore than any other part of this trade, partly because Google publishes less about it and partly because the results move around enough to make anything look like it worked. It is worth starting from what Google actually says, because it is shorter and more useful than most of what is written about it.
What the map pack is ranking
Relevance, distance and prominence
Google Business Profile Help states plainly that local results are based on three factors: relevance, how well a profile matches what someone searched for; distance, how far the business is from the searcher; and prominence, how well known the business is, which it says includes how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have. It adds that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.
Almost every legitimate local SEO task maps onto one of those three. If a proposed tactic does not, be suspicious of it.
Distance is the one you cannot fix
This is the unwelcome part, and the reason a lot of local SEO spend disappoints. Somebody searching from Malviya Nagar and somebody searching from Vaishali Nagar see different results for the same query, and no amount of optimisation moves your premises. If your business is in one part of Jaipur, the map pack across the whole city is not realistically yours.
Two honest responses. If you serve customers at their location, set up as a service-area business and compete on relevance and prominence across the area you actually cover. If you need presence across the city and genuinely operate from more than one place, that is a second real location with real staff, not a second profile at a friend's address. Which brings us to the rules.
The profile itself
Categories do more work than anything else you control
The primary category is the strongest relevance signal on the profile, and it is a single choice from Google's list rather than free text. Pick the one that describes what you primarily are, not the one that sounds most impressive or covers the most ground. Then add secondary categories for the other things you genuinely do.
Look at what the businesses currently ranking for your target query are using. It is visible, it is the fastest research in local SEO, and it frequently explains a result that otherwise looks inexplicable.
The name field is not a keyword field
Google's guidelines for representing your business say the name "should reflect your business's real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers", and they explicitly disallow adding location information to it. Stuffing a city or a service into the name is against the rules, it is reportable by any competitor who notices, and profiles get suspended for it.
The same guidelines say a virtual office, an address you rent but do not operate from, is not eligible for a profile, and that PO boxes are not acceptable. If you are a service-area business without a storefront customers visit, those guidelines say you should hide your address. Doing that correctly is not a downgrade; it is the configuration that matches the business.
Everything else on the profile
Complete the profile properly, because completeness is how a profile becomes relevant to more queries. Real hours, including the festival and holiday closures Indian businesses actually take, because wrong hours generate a specific and bitter kind of review. Services and products listed individually, with descriptions. Photographs of the real premises, the real team and the real work, added regularly rather than once.
Enable messaging only if somebody will answer it. An unanswered message is worse than no messaging button.
Reviews
Asking, without breaking the rules
Google names reviews as part of prominence, so this is not optional. The way to get them is to ask every satisfied customer, at the moment the work is done, with a direct link that lands on the review form. For most Indian businesses the right channel is WhatsApp, because that is where the conversation already is and the link opens straight into the app.
Do not incentivise reviews, do not buy them, and do not have staff write them from the office wifi. Bought reviews are detectable, removable and an ongoing liability. A steady trickle of genuine ones outperforms a burst of suspicious ones in every respect.
Replying
Reply to all of them, including the good ones, in the language the reviewer used. A reply to a negative review is not written for the reviewer, it is written for the next person reading it, and a calm factual response to an angry review does more good than the review did harm. Get the operational problem fixed before writing the reply.
Citations, and how much they still matter
Consistency matters more than volume
A citation is a mention of your business name, address and phone number somewhere on the web. Their weight has fallen over the years, but inconsistency still does damage: three versions of your address with two phone numbers across a dozen sites is noise in exactly the signal you want to be clear.
Settle on one canonical format for name, address and phone, down to the spelling and abbreviations, write it down, and use it everywhere including your own website footer.
Which listings are worth the effort in India
A small number of substantial ones beats a submission service firing your details at hundreds of directories. Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART for relevant trades, your industry association, your local chamber of commerce, and the platforms specific to your sector. For a restaurant that means the food platforms; for a clinic, the health platforms.
Then stop. The returns fall off a cliff, and mass directory submission mostly generates listings you will later have to correct.
Local links are worth more than local listings
Since Google names links as part of prominence, a link from a Jaipur institution is worth more than another directory entry. Sponsor something local. Supply a quote to a local publication. Partner with a complementary business and link to each other because you genuinely refer work. These are slow and they are the part competitors cannot replicate in an afternoon.
What your own website has to do
The location page
If you have premises, you need a page about them with genuinely local content: the address in the same format as your profile, an embedded map, parking and landmark directions, the areas you serve, photographs of the actual place, and the hours. A city page with the city name swapped into generic copy is a thin page, and a set of twenty of them is a thin site.
Make sure the name, address and phone in your footer match the profile exactly. It is the most-crawled instance of your details on your own site.
LocalBusiness structured data
Mark up the business details with LocalBusiness schema, using the same name, address, phone and hours as everywhere else. It does not rank you by itself, and it removes ambiguity about what the page is describing, which is the whole point.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to rank in the Jaipur map pack?
It depends on your category and how far your business sits from where your customers search. A profile that is newly created and unverified has a lot of ground to cover on prominence. A long-established business that simply never claimed its profile can improve quickly, because much of the prominence already exists and was only unclaimed.
Can I rank across all of Jaipur from one location?
For the map pack, not reliably, because distance is a named ranking factor and it is fixed. What you can do is rank organically across the city with proper service and area pages on your website, and dominate the map pack in your own part of it. Treat those as two different jobs with two different tactics.
Do Google Posts help rankings?
Google does not name posts as a ranking factor. They do occupy space on your profile and they show a visitor that the business is active, which is a conversion argument rather than a ranking one. Post because it helps somebody choose you, and do not expect it to move position by itself.
My competitor has keywords in their business name and outranks me. What do I do?
Report it through the profile's own redressal option rather than copying it. Google's guidelines are explicit that the name should be the real-world name, and profiles are suspended over this. Copying a violation to keep up puts your own profile at risk, and a suspension costs far more than the ranking was worth.
